XXXPERIMENTAL
This selection of short experimental films offers a program that challenges and innovates cinematic boundaries, whether it be recycling old film, visually reinterpreting timeless ideas, or creating something completely original. Come and rethink the cinema with us through our experimental shorts!
Derivation – Dir: Hyun-Suk Seo – EXPERIMENTAL - 0:07:00 - SOUTH KOREA
Derivation is a re-assemblage of sensually charged moments from Korean horror films of the 2000's. Recycled as found footage, such derivative motifs as false surprises, quick head turns, sudden awakenings, and screams are repeated to form musical patterns. The rhythmic and rhyme structure creates a pure 'cinematic shock.'
Hurdy Gurdy – Dir: Daniel Seideneder – EXPERIMENTAL - 0:03:30 – GERMANY
An enclosed cosmos - just like a hurdy gurdy, that starts over to play its song anew.
Ima Robot - Greenback Boogie – Dir: Frank Jerky- MUSIC VIDEO - 0:05:51 – USA
The video begins from a couple of public toilet, and then slowly, with time the camera will move sideways and upwards, multiplying the bathrooms, with just about anything coming in and out of it. Whether someone comes in to pee, or to snort cocaine, to get laid or throw up, drunk dancing or smoking weed, from a priest to Santa Claus, from a drag-queen to a policeman, from a biker to a punk, from a gentleman with a briefcase to a little girl, from an old lady with a cane to someone dressed as Elvis, from a whore to a serial killer etc.
Matta - Release The Freq – Dir: Kim Holm – MUSIC VIDEO - 0:04:06 – NORWAY
The video is based around the idea of humanizing deer and using their pure majestic expression accompanied with human perceptions of nature in the form of info-graphics and statistics. I wanted to point out how we make use of animals and put them into systems for our own good. All of this, with a slightly humoristic undertone, to make a point of this, not being a political message, but more like a philosophical study. This is all intended to work in context with Matta’s hard hitting, dark and chaotic musical atmosphere.\
MY BIG-ASSED MOTHER – Dir: TEKLA TAIDELLI – EXPERIMENTAL - 0:12:00 – ITALY/USA
The director, Abel Ferrara, for the first time on the screen, acts Charles Bukowski in an intense reading poetry. A story truly inspired by a novel of Charles Bukowski.
Patient Spider – Dir: Peter Sparling – EXPERIMENTAL - 0:07:06 – USA
Created in Paris in October, 2011, 'Patient Spider' was inspired by a pattern of late-afternoon light cast on the wall of Sparling's atelier at Cite Internationale des Arts. Stepping into that light, he created a dance for the camera which, when taken into editing, suggested a mosaic-like metamorphosis. The resulting work provides a web or kaleidoscope of multiple windows onto the body as it scans inwards and outwards from its promontory. The title, taken from the Walt Whitman poem, 'A Noiseless Patient Spider', and its musical setting by composer Yehuda Yannay, further locates the work as a soulful exploration painted in light, color and the contours of the naked human form.
New Era – Dir: Zachary Taylor, Erica Silverman – NARRATIVE - 0:07:56 – USA
A young girl that gained the courage to live her life without regret, through the wisdom of an elderly friend.
